World's Wonder
Free House

Pub History

Host John and Kathy Roberts

We purchased the pub in November 2005, both coming from professional backgrounds; I a computer programmer and Kathy an accountant.

Always been a little extravert, I enjoy any opportunity for making a fool of myself, and this feature of my personality, I hope would be an asset in the leisure world, and in particular in running the pub, one just never knows what tom foolery I will get up to next—or when.

New to the pub game, I make many mistakes, and I guess it shows, customers are quick to help me and put me right, and I do not mind being the butt of the joke if it makes the clients laugh.

Kathy is a little more reserved, and is the sensible one of the duo, but enjoys the banter herself; on our 1940’s night the antics with the wig was something to see.

We moved to the pub from Rochester, but both of us are Londoners moving to Kent in 1970.

We have 4 children Nicola, Tabitha, Victoria and Kevin, all of whom assist in the pub from time to time.

Our aim is to make the World’s Wonder a family friendly pub, and hope our outgoing approach will encourage people to come and return.

Our restaurant provides good Homemade pub food, with all the ingredients supplied from local businesses, we make and batch or own dishes, and do not rely on pre-packed frozen ready meal dishes, so often  provided within the pub restaurant industry because of connivance.; how do they make the carrots the same shape and size?

I am responsible for the Lasagne (both meat and Vegetarian) and my specialist dish, Chilli con Carne. With other offerings in the pipeline, as my repertoire for basic dishes expands.

Kathy, and our weekend chef prepare all the other dishes, soups and sauces, some cooked to order, which means we can, and do, vary the meal according to the customers requirements, this means we supply what the customer desires, not what is convenient for us, and does not necessarily carry a financial premium to the customer, however, if it is fast food that a customer wants, then we are not the place to come; we pride ourselves on Quality, Quantity at Reasonable prices.

The Bars provide 2 Real ales on permanent draught, Batemans XXXB, and Goachers Best bitter badged as World’s Wonder, We do not brew it ourselves, unfortunately. We do provide Guest beers, usually from local or micro breweries.

Our keg beers, Carling, Grolsch, M & B Mild, Stowford Press Cider and Guinness, as indeed are our real ales, reputed to be the cheapest around., and being a free house in every respect, we use our independence to pass any savings we can get to our customers.

Because of our location we are trying to encourage people to visit us by arranging events. To date wh have had 2 1940’s nights (with ore planned), Country and Western, cabaret (Elvis) night, live soloists and 60-90’s Discos. We also plan to have Race nights, Karaoke and Murder Mystery evenings.

On the Sports front we now have 2 darts teams and are looking to raise a football side, want to join a pool league and have been invited into a quiz league.
